BIOGRAPHY
Martin N. Johansen is a Danish photographer.
He remains committed to issues relating to conservation, climate change, diminishing cultures, wildlife and the environment. His photo stories often have themes relating to the environment and how cultures around the globe relate to nature. He is dedicated to social and humanitarian issues and usually try to include such topics, when he tells a story through his photos.
Martin took up photography at an early age and as a 15-year-old found himself photographing the Scandinavian landscape and its wildlife mostly in monochrome. His first camera was a Nikon FG-20 analog camera, a gift from his father. He soon after established a darkroom at home and began to develop his own films and made black & white prints. One of his favourite subjects to photograph was his beloved dog, an Old Danish Pointer.
Martin’s work has been published by Outside Magazine, Terre Sauvage, Politiken, GEO, Le Figaro and other respected international magazines and newspapers. He has published 6 books and created several eBooks to view on desktop computers. He is currently preparing another title of a book project about the Faroe Islands, which is expected to be published end of 2026.
Martin has received several awards for his photo stories on the environment and some of his pictures have been recognised and highly commended in some international photo competitions.
He was the founder and organiser of the annual co-exhibitions of nature photography, titled 'Grandeur Nature', which was held in Château Royal de Collioure in France from 2005 until 2020.
He has developed a long-term documentary titled 'Føroyar - Náttúra & Fólk'. With this personal project, he aim to photograph the harsh landscapes of the Faroe islands, while documenting the lifestyle of the Faroese as well.
Another long-term photographic project he’s working on, titled 'Apis Dorsata', is to document indigenous communities from northeast India, Myanmar and Bangladesh, who still collects wild honey in a traditional way. A photo documentary about an ancestral art and a rapidly disappearing lifestyle. This project began in 2019, when Martin visited Nagaland in northeast India, to work on a story about some of Asia’s last honey gatherers.
Martin doesn’t use Ai technologies and he never manipulate his pictures when post-processing.
He is a member of Ritzau Scanpix photo agency and NPS Nikon Nordic.
Martin will be available for photo assignments, workshops and speaking engagements. Email him for inquiries.
