Martin N. Johansen Photography

Martin N. Johansen is a Danish photographer.

He remains committed to issues relating to conservation, climate change, diminishing cultures, wildlife and the environment. His photo stories often have themes relating to the environment and how cultures around the globe relate to nature. He is dedicated to social and humanitarian issues and usually try to include such topics, when he tells a story through his photos.

Martin took up photography at an early age and as a 15-year-old found himself photographing the Scandinavian landscape and its wildlife mostly in monochrome. His first camera was a Nikon FG-20 analog camera, a gift from his father. He soon after established a darkroom at home and began to develop his own films and made black & white prints. One of his favourite subjects to photograph was his beloved dog, an Old Danish Pointer.

Martin’s work has been published by Outside Magazine, Terre Sauvage, Politiken, GEO, Le Figaro and other respected international magazines and newspapers. His pictures have appeared in numerous exhibitions around the world and has been displayed in art galleries and in many book p
ublications. Martin has published 6 books about nature and created several eBooks to view on desktop computers. He is currently preparing one more title for book publications in 2025, 'The shadow of the Pyrenees', about a foot journey across the Pyrenees mountains.

Martin has received awards for his photo stories on the environment and several of his pictures have been ‘highly commended’ in some international photo competitions.

Since 2007, he has developed a long-term documentary titled ‘Færøerne-Natur & Mennesker’. With this project, he photographs the harsh landscapes of the Faroe islands and document the lifestyle of the Faroese people.

One of his other long-term photographic project, titled ‘Apis Dorsata’, is to document indigenous communities from
India, Nepal, China and Bangladesh, who still collects wild honey in a traditional way. A photographic documentary about an ancestral art and a rapidly disappearing lifestyle. This project began in 2019, when Martin visited Nagaland, to work on a photo story about some of Asia’s last honey gatherers. His photo story and article on this subject was published in Outside magazine, Abeilles en Liberté, Le Figaro magazine among others.

Martin doesn’t use Ai technologies and he never manipulate his pictures when post-processing. He works with Nikon equipment since many years. He is a member of Biofoto, Ritzau Scanpix agency in Scandinavia.

Martin will be available for photo assignments, workshops and speaking engagements. Email him for inquiries.
